Florida voters are deciding whether to keep an appointed attorney general in the job. Republican James Uthmeier, Governor DeSantis's former chief of staff, was appointed in February 2025 and has never faced voters. Democrat José Javier Rodríguez is a Miami labor lawyer, a former state legislator and an assistant U.S. labor secretary under President Biden. Uthmeier leads the polling average by about 3 points. Independent polls range from a 1-point to a 10-point Uthmeier lead. Uthmeier's campaign and committee had raised about 13.3 million dollars through October 9; Rodríguez's had raised about 3.5 million through October 16. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay's editors back Rodríguez. The Tampa Bay Times made no recommendation in this race; the Orlando Sentinel endorsed Rodríguez. Uthmeier is running on immigration enforcement and consumer protection. He is endorsed by Donald Trump and conservative groups including the Republican Attorneys General Association and the Florida Sheriffs Association. Rodríguez is running on affordability and an independent attorney general's office. Progressive groups including the Florida AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood's Florida PAC and Equality Florida back him. In August, Democratic state senators called for Uthmeier's resignation over the Hope Florida grand jury findings. Uthmeier calls those findings a hoax, and the grand jury brought no charges.
